Creating Art for Earth’s Sake

An advocate of the environment since high school, Leandrez isn’t afraid to be brazen and bold in sharing her passion for the environment and is used to standing up for what she believes in despite popular opinion. If there was an environmental army, you would be certain that she would be on the front lines and take a bullet for the cause. Leandrez believes that New Orleans is the perfect center for the green art movement, despite the cities lack of environmental practices and services and is already doing her part to lead the charge.

The Green Angel: Tony Fitzpatrick

Chicago artist and poet Tony Fitzpatrick may live in Chicago, but his heart and soul belong in New Orleans. I had the good fortune to meet Tony just hours before his reception for the New Orleans Biennial, Prospect.1 (he needed an iPod player, and somebody called me on his behalf). Our city looms large in his life, and his heart; the revitalization of “this holy American place” is something he has chosen to become part of, inviting everyone to join, be part of, get involved in. It is with tremendous gratitude that I have the pleasure to present one of my favorite pieces from Tony Fitzpatrick The New Orleans Series: The Green Angel. Tony’s work is full of hope, desire, determination and the Old World essence that bubbles in our city. Thank you, T ~ for sharing her with us.

Robert Tannen: Defining the Planet

“Dead rocks can say a lot,” said Tannen, “they are a symbol of the mismanagement of the planet: risk and how we deal with the environment. The boulders, for me, are models of what the earth will be if we keep stripping it of its renewable and nonrenewable resources. It’ll become rock again, like the moon. The question is: Can humans and other species live together without humans destroying the habitats of other species?”
