New report reveals toxic coal ash contamination in Louisiana

Nationwide, states responsible for only four of the 35 sites have required an investigation to determine the scale of pollution. Not one state has required the toxic pollution to be stopped, let alone cleaned up – further underscoring the need for strong federal regulations.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: St. Bernard Project Commemorates Katrina’s 5th Anniversary

St. Bernard Project (SBP) has decided to commemorate the 5th anniversary with special events that will reinvigorate its efforts and renew its commitment to its mission as well as the people of New Orleans. SBP will be focusing its efforts in the Lower 9th Ward by completing 5 homes in 5 days, but will also draw attention to St. Bernard Parish by running 24-hour builds on three local homes. SBP invites, encourages, and urges all supporters of the project and the rebuilding of New Orleans to join us for these events.

A Leadership Moment: the Sierra Club delivers a powerful message

The ad is part of a new effort launched by the Sierra Club in the face of the BP Disaster, calling on President Obama to deliver a plan to move America beyond its dependence on oil in the next twenty years. Sierra Club has been organizing rallies around the country and reaching out to volunteers and supporters since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20.

Global Green’s Matt Petersen challenges Obama to take action

Global Green’s Matt Petersen: Now that President Obama has acknowledged that he is responsible for the cleanup, the full resources of the federal government must be deployed to the Gulf. BP may have the only equipment to stop the oil spill, but the US Government certainly has the equipment and manpower to manage a much more engaged and robust cleanup effort than we’ve seen to date.

Drilling and Spilling: Lessons from Ecuador

I travelled to Ecuador with a group called Global Exchange based out of San Francisco. Our goal was to explore the connection between the destruction of the environment and human rights violations by diving into the Amazon jungle and talking with affected local families, indigenous leaders, and environmental organizations.
