Local Spotlight: Top Five for Katrina’s 5th

New Orleans, August 24th ~ There will be many events this week to mark the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina throughout New Orleans as we commemorate the thousands of lost lives, and celebrate the spirit of determination as we propel ourselves forward into a brighter future. While any event this week holds special meaning, the following are Live Green’s Local Top Five for the days leading into 8/29:

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: St. Bernard Project Commemorates Katrina’s 5th Anniversary

St. Bernard Project (SBP) has decided to commemorate the 5th anniversary with special events that will reinvigorate its efforts and renew its commitment to its mission as well as the people of New Orleans. SBP will be focusing its efforts in the Lower 9th Ward by completing 5 homes in 5 days, but will also draw attention to St. Bernard Parish by running 24-hour builds on three local homes. SBP invites, encourages, and urges all supporters of the project and the rebuilding of New Orleans to join us for these events.

LOCAL OPINION: Pedicabs Junction

Perhaps it is the eco-traveler inside us who sees pedicabs as a wonderfully funky, green alternative to getting around town during festival seasons. Needless to say, when Dana Eness with Stay Local/Urban Conservancy shared this request, we latched on to her idea of groovy progressiveness, and would like to invite all of you to help PJ’s Bike Taxi efforts on July 22 @ 2 pm in City Council chambers. Louisiana Citizens Join Worldwide Mobilization Opposing Offshore Drilling, Supporting Clean Energy

“We don’t need to destroy any more of America’s precious coasts and marine life,” said Aaron Viles, Campaign Director of the Gulf Restoration Network. He continued, “It’s time to stand up to the oil industry. It’s time to move America beyond oil and into a clean energy future.”
