LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: St. Bernard Project Commemorates Katrina’s 5th Anniversary
July 21st, New Orleans, LA ~ August 29, 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on the greater New Orleans area. While Katrina may have come and gone, her effects continue to linger into the present. As we continue to rebuild the homes and lives of Katrina survivors, yet another disaster has taken place. The BP/Deep Water Horizon oil spill continues to gush into the Gulf Coast, jeopardizing the livelihoods and culture of so many residents here. That is why St. Bernard Project (SBP) has decided to commemorate the 5th anniversary with special events that will reinvigorate its efforts and renew its commitment to its mission as well as the people of New Orleans. SBP will be focusing its efforts in the Lower 9th Ward by completing 5 homes in 5 days, but will also draw attention to St. Bernard Parish by running 24-hour builds on three local homes. SBP invites, encourages, and urges all supporters of the project and the rebuilding of New Orleans to join us for these events.
There are ways you can be a part of SBP’s team from home.
You can help by spreading the word, committing to volunteer and fundraising to 1) get more families home and 2) make sure residents get the the mental health services they need to recover from both long-term effects of Katrina and the recent oil spill. In addition, there are 5 things you can do from home to help be a part of the solution:

1. Vote for SBP to win $250,000 in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge
2. Donate directly to SBP or via text by sending NOLA to 50555
3. Host a fundraiser in your community for SBP
4. Commit to volunteer in New Orleans in the coming 12 months
5. Spread the word; 1,000+ families are still living in FEMA trailers because they own homes
they can not afford to rebuild, thousands of uninsured residents suffer from mental health problems related to the oil spill and Katrina. Tell your family, friends and community these stats and SBP’s solutions. Use Facebook, Twitter, blog, email, newspaper and other outlets and ask them to do 5 for 5.
