Local Opinion: Cao’s Vote for Health Care May Improve His Political Viability at Home

By Morgan Molthrop

caophotoNew Orleans’ District 2 had been a Democratic stronghold since 1890. The downfall of Representative William Jefferson, as it played out nationally during his re-election campaign, created an opening for a Republican. Voters were ready to give a relatively unknown Vietnamese native named Cao a chance.  A common theme during the last two elections, where voters seem to be against anyone has been IN office.

Since his election, Cao has charted a moderate path. By being the only Republican to vote for the House’s version of the health care bill, he has been thrust into the national spotlight  This will, no doubt, endear him to moderates in District 2, who, earlier this year, were petitioning for his recall. It well also give him more leverage in Washington.

Smart politics? You bet. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger found himself the Republican Governor of what many consider the most liberal state in the Union. He won re-election because his revised agenda included many of the issues that Democrats believe in.  Metaphorically, at least, Arnold went from Hummer to Prius.

Senator Olympia Snowe also used the current polarization to attract attention to herself, her state, and to the idea that people can have their own opinions regardless of their party affiliation. Her vote was crucial in October: no doubt she’ll be the center of attention as the Senate votes on the final version, as well.

As the two feuding parties try to feel their way to the next election cycle, perhaps they should look to the center. It seems that’s where the real action is.
