Local Spotlight: Green Economy, Green Jobs Fair

On the heels of President Obama’s Town Hall meeting last week at UNO, Live Green New Orleans applauds another first from Global Green USA: the 1st Annual Student Green Jobs/Career Fair for New Orleans Public High School students. The Green Jobs Fair will host four hour-long sessions featuring 23 career topics with local speakers discussing their specific careers and why they chose that particular path. Global Green will also provide free breakfast and lunch for attendees who register by Friday, October 23rd at 12noon.

Spuds and Huey: Stange Bedfellows?

If you don’t listen to WWL talk radio, you might be able to arrive at the recent production of The Kingfish without preconceived ideas about the one-man show’s actor, John “Spud” McConnell. Not all of WWL’s programming leans right – certainly Garland Robinnette is a refreshing voice of moderation and an asset to the local community. “Talk Gumbo” or “The Spud Show,” however, is an example of opinion-based “entertainment” directed to an audience that tends to be enamored by the host’s local celebrity and black and white thinking

Looking Back, Readying for the Future: HNOC Gets Closer to Hip

We ventured down to the Historic New Orleans Collection for the second time in a month on Friday night: this after a long life of never having passed through the doors. When you grow up in New Orleans, you tend to accept certain institutions as established and familiar: in other words, something for grown-ups where Aunt Beverly worked as a docent. The HNOC, for its long, dedicated life, has been worthy, wonderful, notable, and venerable, but a visit might be put off – for years. In my case, over forty years.
