Hope for the Great Green Generation

Keynote speaker Jerome Ringo (photo courtesy of the Apollo Alliance), president of the Apollo Alliance, started off the event with a relevant and informed speech about the future of environmentalism and how environmental problems affect New Orleans in particular. Ringo noted that there has been an incredible rise of what he called “climate refugees,” that is, the displacement of the peoples because of climate related issues. After Hurricane Katrina, of course, over 1 million Gulf Coast residents were displaced – a prime example of climate refugees.

Tina Freeman: Photos of Lakefront Airport

With two hangers in the distance in a state of utter disrepair, and some planes still upside down on the sidelines, the overall scene – in reality and as captured by Freeman – presents a pictorial state of affairs in post-Katrina New Orleans. Federal money is being spent on a structural renovation. Some abandoned buildings will never recover; they sit roofless and forlorn. And we see the entry port of the recession-proof, perhaps flying in for lunch at Galatoire’s.
