5 Trick Plays for a Greener Tailgate

tailgatingYou can feel it in the air these days…those ideas for a crisp, clean, let’s tailgate green party.  With the Saints final pre-season game this Thursday, September 3rd against Miami at the Superdome, followed by LSU at Washington on Saturday, you best be making groceries, girl!

Live Green New Orleans invites you to make your tailgate eco-friendly not only this week, but all through the season.  Here’s our five trick plays for a greener tailgate party:

  1. Use Propane gas instead of charcoal.  Tru-dat, propane is a petroleum product — but it burns a lot cleaner than charcoal or wood fires. Propane also leaves behind less waste, and is particularly convenient when you’re cooking away from home. If you are a charcoal fiend, then consider an eco-friendly brand liked Wicked Good instead.
  2. Veggie dogs. We said these were five trick plays. Consider it a first down and goal, pile on the onions and peppers and hand it to him with that ever-so-sassy grin.  Then pat him on the bumm and hand him #3.
  3. Organic beer ~ or our local sustainable best, Abita.
  4. No paper plate for you.  Consider bringing reusable outdoor dishes (Target no doubt has them on sale right now) and use them throughout the season.  Food tastes better on a real plate.
  5. Crank up the radio.  No, seriously, CRANK it.  We all have one after Katrina in our homes as part of our evacuation kits.  Why not pull them out this fall and actually use them?  Consider it a warm-up for the pregame commentary.
