Entergy: Ahead of the Sustainable Curve?
Amid the highly contested controversy all across America over the Clean Energy Bill (aka Cap & Tax Bill) that made its way through the House last Friday only to meet tough challenges in the Senate this week, our local electric provider, Entergy (NYSE: ETR), released its 2008 sustainability report, Meeting the Challenge, highlighting the company’s environmental, social and economic performance this past year.
Entergy was named to the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index in 2008, their fifth consecutive year to receive this recognition. Named also to the exclusive Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for a seventh consecutive year in 2008, Entergy was, again, the only U.S. utility selected for the world index.
“This latest report illustrates that not only can the company remain competitive and financially successful in the short run, but also it can do right by future stakeholders,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer J. Wayne Leonard. “Even in the face of record-setting, back-to-back hurricanes and a global financial crisis, our focus on sustainability never wavered. Without question, it is our culture and our demonstrated record of safely achieving ambitious financial, social and environmental objectives simultaneously that forms the bedrock we build upon every day.”
Highlights from Entergy’s 2008 sustainability report include:
- Cumulative CO2 emissions from 2002-2008 were nearly 18 percent below the company’s cumulative stabilization goal
- A total of 60 Entergy work sites now have Star status under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program
- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program secured $313 million in federal funding.

Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, delivering electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $13 billion and approximately 14,700 employees.
